Gilded Wall Lights

One of a pair, these 19th Century gilded wall lights were disintegrating before our very eyes and the composition and gesso was badly cracked due to shrinkage and age.  A DIY repair had been carried out with bronze paint on both lights which once removed by hand-stripping revealed the original gold.

There were many broken and missing pieces which were re-moulded by hand onto the lights using traditional materials before using bole. The lights were finally water and oil gilded in 24ct gold and re-united with their proud owners.

We  invite you to look at our project showcases where examples of restoration works undertaken for customers are shown:

French Empire Table

This early 19th Century French Empire table was a well used and treasured item in need of restoration due to wear and tear and removal damage.
The whole table was taken apart and stripped back to basics as shown in the image opposite, before using traditional French polishing techniques to bring the table back to life. It now has pride of place in our client's home and is much talked about and admired by visitors.

Thomas Hope Chair

A family heirloom from the early 19th Century, this Thomas Hope chair had been sorely neglected for almost 80 years before it was brought to Taylor's Antiques for restoration. The picture opposite shows the chair completely taken apart so that we could lovingly restore it one piece at a time.  After restoring each part it was re-glued using traditional scotch glue, the seat was re-upholstered using original woven horsehair and the back of the chair gilded in 24ct gold.  Now happily restored to it's former glory.
